East Jaintia Hills District : Headquarter - Khliehriat
East Jaintia Hills District is one of the 11 (eleven) districts of the state of Meghalaya. With the bifurcation of the erstwhile Jaintia Hills District, East Jaintia Hills District with district headquarter at Khliehriat came into existence on 31st July 2012.
The district has total geographic area of is 2,126 Sq. Km with a population of 1,22,436 (Census 2011). It is the home of one of the major tribes of the state of Meghalaya popularly known as the ‘Jaintias’ or the ‘Pnars’ and other sub tribes like the ‘Wars’ and the ‘Biates’.
The district shares borders with West Jaintia Hills District of Meghalaya in the north, and Dima Hasao District of Assam in north and Cachar District of Assam in south and east. Further, the district shares international border with Bangladesh in south.
The district is known for Coal & Limestone mining. It is an important trade transit route for North-Eastern States as National Highway-6 passes through the district from Malidor to Tuber Shohshrieh.
