Community Policing through Village Defence Parties
Welfare Activities Undertaken by the District Police

Welfare of the Police personnel and their families have been given priority. Some of the welfare activities taken up in the last two years are underlined below :-

COMMUNITY POLICING THROUGH VILLAGE DEFENCE PARTIES :

  • The district has 216 registered VDPs and + 3000 volunteers. The VDP conduct regular vice raids with the Police and they assist the police in making arrest of criminals . The services of VDP have been found useful in tracking the movement of militants which have led to some successful operations against the militants in 2008.
  • The First VDP Rally of Mairang Sub-Division was organized by the District Police at Mairang on 23rd October, 2009 . 300 sordars and VDP members attended. The theme of the rally was "Help Police to help you". Lecture on Powers and Functions of VDPs as per the "Meghalaya Village Defence Organisation Rules 2008". and relevant sections of IPC and Cr. P.C.
  • As a part of the Rally the Commandant, of Home Guard and Civil Defence, Meghalaya and his team of officers gave a demonstration on first aid, rescue and search operation in a disaster management situation.
  • VDP rallies re scheduled at Mawkyrwat Civil Sub-Division and Ranikor. In November this year.

POLICE TRANSIT CAMP :-

On 1st September, 2007 a fully furnished 4-bedded Police Transit Camp was opened at Nongstoin for officers of the rank of Sub-Inspectors and above.

A 10- bedded Transit Camp was also opened for Constables to Havildars/Head Constables at Police Reserve.

CANTEEN :-

On 1st February,2008 a "Police Dry Canteen" was inaugurated to facilitate police personnel to buy household requirements at reasonable rates.

NONGSTOIN POLICE WIVES SELF HELP GROUP :-

Nongstoin Police Wives Self Help Group was registered with the Registrar of Societies, West Khasi Hills, Nongstoin on 18th August, 2008. The first activity taken up by them was stitching of police uniform with a minimal of amount kept for building up of the tailoring unit. Such gainful activities augment the family income of the police personnel.

SPORTS ACTIVITIES :-

A badminton court cum mini parade ground was constructed and inaugurated in SP's office complex on 1st December, 2008 funded by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs.
Personnel of this District have participated in a number of football tournaments and have won numerous trophies like the Inter Office Championship, the Western Football Club Organisation, Nongstoin Championship, including cash award of Rs.35,0001-, Runners Up of the Kynshi Football Invitational, Runners Up of the Mawkyrwat Sports Association Trophy.

WELFARE FUNDS :-

A Welfare Fund has been raised to grant advances to the staff for medical treatment, ex-gratia payment and other contingent requirements.
